Representations of Ethnic Minorities in Current Media

The subject of the thesis is an analysis of the representation of the Muslim minority in contemporary media, and thus deals in particular with the issue of the representation of ethnic minorities. The theoretical section presents the area of representation and its form and functions in the sphere of media and journalism; at the same time, presents the problem of stereotyping and its form in contemporary online media. The practical part of the thesis deals with the analysis of selected articles from the Czech media from 2019. These were selected on the basis of the keywords Muslim, Islam, refugee and migrant in four different online news sites, namely Aktuálně.cz, iDnes.cz, Extra.cz and Parlamentní listy. Their analysis is subject to work with subtitles, text and visual material. The aim of the thesis is to affect the general traits that appear in the material and at the same time the tendency that leads to such imaging. Last but not least, the thesis is also devoted to comparing selected online servers.
Comparative Analysis of Comments under Articles on Sexualized Violence on Czech News Online Servers

This diploma thesis deals with a comparative analysis of comments under articles about sexualized violence on the Czech online news servers iDNES.cz and novinky.cz. The theoretical part describes gender-based violence and sexualized violence and deals with the definition of the act itself as well as definitions of the victims and the perpetrators. It also describes the process of victimization and the myths of sexualized violence, which it analyses in detail based on selected literature. Next comes the issue of new media, which enable users to actively participate in the creation of content, and therefore also in writing comments. Subsequently, the phenomenon of online uncivil behaviour, cyberviolence and hate speech is described. This is followed by a related chapter on online gender-based and sexualized violence and an overview of research on this topic. The methodological part describes the chosen methods of quantitative and qualitative analysis. The following is a description of the profiles of the selected servers iDNES.cz and novinky.cz, as well as the biggest cases of sexualized violence for the year 2021. Media representation of social inadaptability - critical discourse analysis

The theme of this thesis is a conceptualization of media discourse of social inadaptability on example of news reporting on the internet portal iDNES.cz. I am analysing various ideological resources and social conditions which may influence the existence and prevailing of this discourse type. My goal was also to answer the question which social groups and individuals are associated with this label and what characteristics are attributed to them by journalists. The survey examined media texts from 2006 to 2009 within theoretical and methodological framework of the critical discourse analysis by Norman Fairclough.
The growth in importance of the media social networking on the example of the 2015 IIHG Ice Hockey World Championship

This bachelor's thesis discusses the media utilisation of social networks such as Facebook and Twitter during a top worldwide sporting event. The theoretical part deals with the new media family, then with Facebook and Twitter, their history and operating principles. Besides the methodology, it also presents the 2015 IIHF World Championship, being the main subject of the social media networking. The content analysis of the social newtorks posts had been chosen as the research method for this thesis. The objective is finding out how these three chosen Czech media - Česká televize, news server iDnes.cz and Deník Sport were using the two social networks to inform the public about the tournament progress. The second goal was to compare the account contents of the three media to the two Czech IIHF Organization Committee channels and find out about the mistakes the media made while posting on social networks. The shovelware phenomenon is analysed extensively as one of the most used negative elements.
The issue of antisemitism in selected Czech media

This bachelor thesis focuses on the analysis of the topic of antisemitism in articles published between 2019 and 2020 on five chosen Czech news websites iDNES.cz, Aktuálně.cz, Seznam Zprávy, iROZHLAS.cz and ČT24. The aim of the thesis is to describe media imagine of the topic of antisemitism and how the selected media inform about antisemitism, by using quantitative and qualitative analysis. Theoretical part of the thesis is mainly focused on the definiton of the concepts, well known from the media and communication studies such as agenda-setting, framing, gatekeeping, news values or the history of propaganda. This part of the thesis also focuses on the topic of antisemitism itself, it's history, definition and modern usage of this term. Methodological part is mainly focused on brief description of the five chosen news websites, their history and ownership structure, followed by defining the selected methods of analysis that are used in this bachelor thesis. The result of the analysis was that both public service media and private media reflected the topic of antisemitism most often in the form of a news article. Foreign events predominate in all monitored media and surprisingly, no significant differences were found between public and private media in the types of sources they used.
Media Reprezentation of the Scout Movement in Czech Internet Media iDNES.cz and Novinky.cz

This thesis named " Media Representation of the Scout Movement in Czech Internet Media iDNES.cz and Novinky.cz" focuses on the way Scouting is pictured in these two popular types of Czech media. The aim of the work is to analyse certain titles to find out how Scouting is presented as an organisation. The work is divided into three main parts - theoretical resource, methodological and analytical parts. The first chapter interprets technical terms mainly connected with the representation of reality or construction of reality. Furthermore, the chapter offers a brief interpretation of history and the current state of Czech Scouting. The second methodological part contains a description of the methods applied and shortly characterises certain titles. Finally, the last part describes particular forms of presentation of the Scout movement in certain media. The problematic is handled with three set research questions. By means of qualitative analyses, the work thoroughly describes the presentation of the Scout movement by certain media.
Reporting Ice-Hockey: Women's and Men's Perspective

The thesis called Reporting Ice-hockey: Women's and Men's Perspective focuses on possible differences in works of female and male sports journalists. In the theoretical part, the issue of gender in sports journalism, basic stereotypes associated with the work of female sports journalists and the characteristics of the female writing style are introduced. In the practical part, reports of specific Czech journalists about ice-hockey are analysed. The analysis includes audio-visual reports from Branky, body, vteřiny; Hokej den poté, and written reports from Mladá fronta Dnes and online news server iDNES.cz. The emphasis is put on, for example, the frequency of statistical data, the description of the atmosphere and emotions, the originality of expressions or the use of sports journalism jargon and clichés. The aim of the qualitative content analysis is to prove whether and how the reports of selected female and male sports journalists differ.
Twitter as a source of journalistic work in selected online newspapers during the government crisis in May 2017

The bachelor thesis deals with an analysis of the use of information from the social networking service Twitter in the process of journalistic work. I study the employment of information from Twitter in news during the government crisis in May 2017. For the analysis, I chose three online news sites: Aktuálně.cz, iDnes.cz and iRozhlas.cz. The goal of this thesis is to find out to what extent and in which way was the information from Twitter involved in the coverage of the government crisis in the chosen news sites. Another goal is to analyse the selection of sources from Twitter. The research follows a method of quantitative content analysis, which allows us to describe an exact extent of the involvement of information from the social network in the analyzed content. The theoretical part of the bachelor thesis characterizes the network digital media and describes the processes of digital mediamorphosis and convergence, which are related to the rise of the so-called new media. The theoretical part then introduces the social network site Twitter, its establishment and principles of its functioning, with a special focus on the role of Twitter as a source of journalistic work.
